General Description
• Creatine is an amino acid made naturally by the body that can also be acquired through dietary consumption
• It is primarily stored in skeletal muscle tissue
• Creatine is stored in a phosphate form, and upon depletion of ATP deposits, phosphocreatine is able to donate phosphate groups to rapidly replenish ATP
• Creatine supplementation may be beneficial as a disease treatment, particularly in diseases of muscle wasting including cancer and chronic disease
Applications
• Creatine may be used in the laboratory to study its potential for use as a treatment for metabolic and muscle wasting diseases
• Creatine has been found to have antitumor, antiviral, and antidiabetic effects
• It is also used in laboratory settings to study neurological disorders and has been found to be neuroprotective against hypoxic conditions
